The 34970A is a data acquisition and switch mainframe with a built-in high-precision digital multimeter (DMM). 

• It lets you connect a variety of sensor types (thermocouples, RTDs/thermistors, voltages, currents, resistances, frequency/period, etc.) — up to many channels (depending on modules) — and automatically log or switch signals. 

• Internally it has a 6½-digit (22-bit) DMM, capable of accurately measuring small signals. 

• You can add plug-in modules (switch / mux modules) to customize how many channels you need, and what kinds of signals you’re measuring. 

• It has interfaces like GPIB and RS-232 for connecting to a computer or automation system. 

In short: it’s a laboratory / test-bench instrument used in electronics, engineering, research — for logging data, switching multiple measurement channels automatically, or building test-automation rigs.
